Jabez was a Hebrew descendant who yearned for more blessings, and author, Bruce Wilkinson, tells us in his book: The Prayer of Jabez: Breaking through to the blessed life, that according to First Chronicles 4:9, “Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, “Oh that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!” And it says in First Chronicles: “So God granted him what he requested”. Jabez was petitioning for miracles. Christ Jesus told us, “What things soever ye desire when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask Him” (King James version of the Bible in Matthew). Mary Baker Eddy says in her book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, (pg 1:10) “Thoughts unspoken are not unknown to the divine Mind. Desire is prayer, and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and deeds.” (pg 2:5) “The desire which goes forth hungering after righteousness is blessed of our Father and it does not return unto us void.” (pg 2:15) “Prayer cannot change the Science of being, but it tends to bring us into harmony with it”. (2:23) “God is Love. Can we ask Him to be more?” (pg 2:26) “Shall we plead for more at the open fount, which is pouring forth more than we accept? The unspoken desire does bring us nearer the source of all existence and blessedness”. Bruce writes, “You will set in motion a cycle of blessing that will keep multiplying what God is able to do in and through you”. And he says that “when we seek God’s blessings as the ultimate value in life, we are throwing ourselves entirely into the river of His will and power and purposes for us. God’s power to accomplish great things suddenly finds no obstruction in you; you’re moving in His direction”. Bruce writes a few prayers of his own: “Lord, keep me safe from temptations that pull at my emotions and my physical needs, that call out to my sense of what I deserve, what I have the “right” to feel and enjoy. Because You are the true source of all that is really life, direct my steps away from all that is not of You”. And, “Lord, keep me safe from the pain and grief that sin brings, for the dangers that I can’t see or the ones I think I can risk because of my experiences (pride and carelessness); put up a supernatural barrier. Protect me, Father, by your power!” Bruce says, “Stay out of the area of temptation whenever possible, but never live in fear or defeat. By God’s power, you can keep your legacy of blessing safe”. Your Father know your gifts, your hindrances, and the condition you’re in at every moment. And He knows something you can’t possibly know –every single person who’s in desperate need of receiving His touch through you. God will bring you to that person at exactly the right time and in the right circumstances. And at that moment, you will receive power to be His witness”. I read years ago that “sin” is an old Anglo-Saxon archery term, which means – to be “off the mark”. So “sin” just means being on the wrong trajectory or path. We just need to pray to be set back on the right course. Even Jesus prayed for deliverance when tempted in the wilderness. “God’s bounty is limited only by us, not by His resources, power, or willingess to give. God’s nature is to bless”, says Bruce. I prayed several years ago, working with the prayer of Jabez, and my husband and I ended up selling our big four square house in town, and purchased a big old house in the country with five acres – a peaceful place to retire and write. “Let me encourage you friend, to reach boldly for the miracle”, Bruce says, “to pray for larger borders is to ask for miracle”. He says, “Asking for God’s hand upon us is our strategic choice to sustain and continue the great things that God has begun in our lives. The “hand of God” is a biblical term for God’s power and presence in the lives of His people”. “Prayer is the medium of miracles” it says in the book, A Course in Miracles, and explains, “It is a means of communication of the created with the Creator; through prayer Love is received, and through miracles Love is expressed”. I would end this blog with two quotes from King James version of the Bible: James 4:2 “You do not have because you do not ask”. And from: Malachi 3:10 “…and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it”. Amen! Ready your mind to receive miracles!
