Many world-power, monied-interests were behind helping the Taliban, and several banks laundered billions of dollars during this 2 decade scheme. Afghanistan was referred to as “the forgotten war”, but suddenly with TV images of thousands of Afghan people trying to flee, people seem to have awakened & now care about their plight. Since president Ghani fled, news reports stated that the corrupt government had stolen the salaries of the Afghan fighters, which were paid by the U.S. The disheartened-fighters, out of food, water & ammunition, with no government left in place, returned to their families & villages, as the Taliban surged across Afghanistan.

Some say that Biden didn’t have to honor the May 2021 deadline to withdraw, but the Taliban want US out, and Biden would have had to deploy thousands more U.S. forces to stay; and Biden has long been against U.S. troops continuing the fight in Afghanistan. Too much Blood & Treasure has been spent there already. The 2nd best time to leave is NOW! The Biden administration had to extend the May deadline in order to process Special Immigrant Visas for qualifying Afghans. Since Afghanistan fell, as of 8/23/21, our Pentagon has evacuated over 40,000 Afghans out of Kabul, but the Taliban is demanding WE LEAVE NOW! This evacuation process has been dangerous for all involved. Americans were advised, by our government, to leave months ago. It’s unrealistic to think that we can free all Afghans that want to leave their country. That can’t happen. War is death, bloodshed, suffering & strife, it’s heartbreaking! Our mission in 2001 was to bring vengeance to Al Qaeda & death to Bin Laden; then our mission morphed into bringing democracy to Afghanistan. We can barely maintain democracy in America; let’s focus on passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to strengthen democracy in America & strengthen our own infrastructure.

“U.S. peace envoy’s years of peace negotiations go up in flames in Afghanistan; what went wrong?” NBC News story 8/13/21, by Dan De Luce, detailed how President Trump & his Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo fully endorsed the deal brokered by envoy Zalmay Khalilzad between the U.S. & the Taliban leaders, mainly without any Afghan govt officials present. Afghan president, “Ashraf Ghani’s, national security advisor, accused Khalilzad in 2019 of selling out the Afghan govt in the talks, lending the Taliban a veneer of credibility”. (Remember in 2019, when Trump & Erdogan released thousands of ISIS jihadists to go reconstitute elsewhere, and Trump abandoned the Kurds to Erdogan?) Khalilzad conferred with diplomats from China, Russia & other world powers in Doha, Qater in 2020, as the Taliban unleashed a military onslaught to retake Afghanistan by force. Taliban terrorists were awarded a seat at the table, not negotiating in good faith, they pushed their demands for the U.S. to leave Afghanistan. The peace talks were going nowhere, and Trump, who broadcast his desires for a U.S. unilateral withdrawal undermined the envoy’s peace-efforts, by extracting troops ahead of schedule, conceding to the insurgent’s demands, and leaving only 2500 troops until the determined final troop withdrawal, May 2021 deadline. Experts say that the U.S. lost any leverage with the Taliban once it made clear its eagerness to remove American troops. This is the situation that President Biden inherited this year.

Afghan president, Ashraf Ghani fled the presidential palace 8/15/21, “to avoid bloodshed” in Afghanistan aka Islamic Emirate, only days after vowing he’d be among the leaders ready to defend their country; it is rumored that Ghani has flown to Uzbekistan. So after we’ve waged war in Afghanistan for 20 years, spent blood & treasure, over $2T, the Taliban warlords have surged across that country, opening prison doors, swelling their ranks, bent on exacting their strict Islamic Sharia law, murdering artists, musicians, translators, and all those who were against them, while gathering lists of females to be given to their Taliban brethren. Allah has rewarded them with victory over the infidels. Some say, “if we’d just have stayed a little longer & killed more people, we could have made a bigger difference”. Afghan national military & police dead 66,000; Taliban & opposition fighters dead 51,191; Afghan civilians dead 47,245; US contractors dead 3846; American military dead 2448; Allied service members dead 1144; Aid workers dead 444, Journalists dead 72. I thank President Biden for assuming the responsibility of ending our involvement, not sending my grandkids to fight the Taliban.

The July 2021 job report boasted over 900,000 people joined the active workforce! That was a hopeful sign, since millions of jobs were lost over the last dozen months due to pandemic. However, before we could celebrate that gain, we’re hit with the devastating news that the deadly Covid-19 Delta-variant is surging through our nation, mainly infecting children and the unvaccinated, but even those of us who have been vaccinated can still contract this virus, and can still transmit it even if we don’t show signs of illness. As many took to the skies to visit vacation resorts, many hotspots flared-up around the nation; destinations, such as Lake of Ozarks, MO, where thousands flocked to concerts, camps, hotels & restaurants. Chicago’s Lollapalooza, South Dakota’s Sturgis motorcycle rally, Florida’s Disney world, and multitudes of other attractions draw huge, jam-packed crowds, even as many hospitals are RIGHT NOW having to turn away afflicted people, as they have no available beds. The U.S. tops the list for most infections, even more than India. Even as the vaccine saves lives, is accessible & free, it seems most folks who want the protection have availed themselves. Some employers are requiring their employees to be vaccinated; federal workers were mandated to receive the vaccine. Just as we dropped our masks, the virulent Delta-mutated-virus spiked- up, and so we are back to donning masks & many are returning to social distancing. As we’ve struggled to recover physically, mentally, emotionally, economically from the pandemic, the Delta-variant threatens to undo our recovery. “Ask what you can do for your country?” Do your part to help your fellow countryfolk, wear a mask, be kind, live smart; Live, & Let Live!

The U.S. Senate 8/10/21, passed the bipartisan $1.2 T, “Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act”, a “blue-collar blueprint to rebuild America”, which President Biden touts: “90 percent of the jobs not requiring a college degree”. Plumbers & pipefitters replacing lead pipes, so we can all drink clean water, American workers restoring our levees, rebuilding roads & bridges, re-envisioning public transit, upgrading railroad tracks & building new lines, building charging stations for electric vehicles, greatly reducing pollution, providing high-speed internet for all Americans. The Dems will now work on compromising on a larger Reconciliation bill, a 3rd Reconstruction, which intends to address & combat climate change. We have seen the calamitous-storms, flash-floods, raging-wildfires, sweltering-heat, oceans heating up, killing more food sources. The U.N. Climate report decried humanity’s role in climate change & alerted a “CODE RED” for humanity.

Isabel Wilkerson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration”, has a new bestseller: “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontent”; a central theme being that “caste, while a global occurrence, achieves its most violent manifestation in the treatment of American Blacks, set at the lowest level in society through historical & contemporary oppression, marginalization & violence — all legally maintained through systems of law & order.” NYT Chicago bureau chief said, “the book does not disappoint; a profound achievement of scholarship & research that stands also as a triumph of both visceral story-telling & cogent analysis”. Wilkerson explains, “caste is the granting or withholding of respect, status, honor, attention, privileges, resources, benefit of the doubt, and human kindness to someone on the basis of their perceived rank or standing in the hierarchy. Racism & casteism do overlap, and that what some people call racism could be seen as merely one manifestation of the degree to which we have internalized the larger American caste system.”

William Howard Taft, Republican, defeated three-time Democratic-nominee, William Jennings Bryan in 1908, carrying most states outside of the ‘Solid-South’. Democratic, New Jersey Governor, Woodrow Wilson defeated Taft in 1912, at a time when fundamental changes were occurring in politics. “Wilson embraced a ‘New Freedom’ version of progressivism. Yet after 1912, the Republican party began to shift ideologically to the Right. The Republican party’s ‘small-government platform’ cemented in 1930, with its heated opposition to FDR’s New Deal.” Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Democrat, former NY Governor, served four-terms as president, inherited the Great Depression, and implemented his ‘New Deal Coalition’, defining modern liberalism, in response to our history’s worst economic crises. FDR regulated financial institutions, founded welfare & pension programs, and implemented infrastructure development. His 3rd & 4th terms were dominated by WWII, which ended shortly after he died in office, in 1945.

Harry S. Truman, 33rd president, succeeding to office upon the death of FDR in 1945, was elected in 1948, even though, after introducing a pro-civil-rights platform at the party’s 1948 Convention, a faction walked out. These defectors, known as Dixiecrats, held a separate convention in Birmingham, AL, where they nominated anti-civil-rights, S.C. Governor Strom Thurmond. “Thurmond lost the election, though he won over a million popular votes. Truman implemented the Marshall Plan to rebuild the economy of Western Europe after WWII, and he established the Truman Doctrine & NATO, to contain Communist Expansion. He proposed numerous liberal domestic-reforms, but few were enacted by the ‘Conservative Coalition’ that dominated Congress.”

Start planting these seeds of thought for a more balanced life early this month, and by the full moon on Aug 23, some of these sprouts will begin coming to fruition. “For many people, the full moon accompanied by Jupiter will be a positive event.
