BA.2 subvariant of Covid-19, called ‘stealth omicron’ is causing resurgences of infections sweeping through Western Europe, 97 countries and all 50 U.S. states, and comprises nearly 25 to 45 percent of current cases; it appears inherently more transmissible, though not necessarily more severe than its sister-version, BA.1, the variant that led to testing errors with some Covid-19 tests not discerning that strain. BA.2 is one of the 5 sub-lineages of the omicron variant, and is now dominating cases worldwide. Just as many areas have dropped mask & vaccine mandates and testing requirements, China is enforcing strict lockdowns, as cases are soaring in mainland China, Hong Kong, and South Korea. The best advice from CDC & WHO still stands: get vaccinated, boosted, and wear masks in high-risk areas. There are some good anti-viral meds to help alleviate symptoms, but the best bet is the vaccine, which provides nearly 90 percent protection against the risk of dying or needing a ventilator, though we may need to get boosted annually. Pfizer and Moderna have both requested FDA approval for their 2nd booster to be available soon. Researchers are working at designing vaccines, not merely against single variants, but focusing on pan-coronavirus vaccines, and scientists say that Covid-19 will always behave like an epidemic virus, never becoming an endemic illness. On another subject; for all those who have watched days of the televised Senate confirmation hearings of the exceptionally-qualified, Katanji Brown Jackson for Supreme Court Justice, OMG; this has been such a difficult, exasperating exercise in patience! For viewers, for reasonable senators, and especially for her, though she displayed extremely-enviable judicial temperament! The queries, so disrespectful & inappropriate, the speeches, so tedious & petty, the several GOP racist-clowns have really outdone themselves. More performers than legislators, some were just casting soundbites for their next presidential bid. The focus of some senators, including Hawley, Cruz & Graham, on a handful of sentences meted out by Judge Jackson years ago, personally attacked her for being too lenient in sentencing, such as the sentence of 3 months in prison & subsequent supervision for an 18 year old ‘man’, a high school graduate, guilty of downloading child-porn images on his laptop. Their attacks seemed more like fodder for QAnon-fans than legitimate concerns, for which they COULD legislate mandatory minimum sentences, if they weren’t afraid of losing their seats. The remarkable, ‘presidential, dare I say’ Senator Cory Booker, bless his ever-loving, magnanimous, compassionate-heart, elevated the conversation two days in a row, and made us cry joyful tears. Thank you SO MUCH Cory Booker! I’d vote for a ‘Harris-Booker’ ticket in 2024 in a heartbeat!
