Thirty laws in eighteen states recently passed electoral restrictions, some shifting power over elections to partisan entities, away from Secretaries of State. This is NOT about voter-fraud, NOT about voter-integrity, NOT about mail-in ballots or voter IDs; it’s about making it easier for the GOP to undo election results they don’t like, in future elections. WE THE PEOPLE, ARE NOT GONNA HAVE IT! The Senate GOP, blocked a voting-rights bill 50 to 50, right after passing a bipartisan $1.2T, Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act. The proposed “For The People Act”, pro-democracy bill, bans partisan & racial gerrymandering. Millions of voters took to the streets 8/28/21, to march, calling for lawmakers to protect voting-rights; the 58th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr’s, “I Have a Dream” speech, in which King called for civil & economic-rights, and ending racism in America. The Filibuster, a Jim Crow remnant, needs abolished; we at least need a carveout of the filibuster to pass needed legislation. “Voter suppression anywhere is a threat to democracy everywhere!”
The new Census records show America is a younger, more urban & diverse electorate than ever before. The GOP figure they have to cheat to win, since they offer so little to voters. We need federal voting-rights protections to overcome these attempts to suppress our ballots being counted, and we need to overcome any provisions that allow suppression of the elderly, the disabled, and voting during a pandemic. We need nonviolent civil-disobedience to combat this oppression. The supposed minorities are no longer the minority. We’re a multi-cultural America now & we demand to be represented as such. “Power cedes nothing without a demand!” said Frederick Douglas. The battle is thrust upon us, and we are rising to the occasion. This tumult we’re facing, the changes we are undergoing, seems to be a time of ‘healing the remnant’ of the Civil War, which remained unhealed for so long. This fight is: restricting vs expanding our civil-rights. Since the political parties flipped platforms several decades ago, this time it’s the Democrats who are FOR diversity, FOR the majority, pro-civil-rights, pro-humanity, pro-women: addressing the public’s needs, public health & welfare, and climate change initiatives. What makes America special? Our Constitution, a living, breathing document, that can & must evolve as our nation evolves. The GOP is attempting a chokehold on ‘US’, kneeling on our necks, but WE WILL OVERCOME, and equality & diversity will win the day! RISE-UP!
