TPP, negotiated for years, was a 12-nation pact, roundly questioned. Obama sought to “set new terms for trade and business investments, (and to strengthen NAFTA — its current agreement with Canada and Mexico)”. The New York Times stated that the “goal was to bind the Pacific-Rim nations closer through lower tariffs, while also serving as a buttress against China’s growing regional influence — to unlock opportunities and address 21st century issues within the global economy — issues like e-commerce, financial services and cross-border internet communications”. Opponents felt the pact was a “giveaway to business, encouraging further exports of manufacturing jobs to low-wage nations, limiting competition and encouraging higher prices for pharmaceutical and other high-value products by spreading American standards for patent protections to other countries”. John McCain criticized the withdrawal stating, “It will send a troubling signal of American disengagement in the Asian-Pacific region at a time we can least afford it”. I have not read the full 30 chapters on TPP, nor am I learned enough to understand the entire ramifications thereof. Trish Forsyth Voss
