Removing lifeguards at Lake Storey?

I remember so many times as a kid sunning on the beach and swimming in Lake Storey, which used to draw quite a crowd.  There should be ongoing improvements done to the lake’s water quality and cleaning up the beach.  Expensive improvements were made to the pavilion, which I understand is rented out for functions.  Many people in and around our community cannot afford to belong to private clubs and pay fees for municipal pools.  There have been deaths by drowning at Lake Storey, with lifeguards present.  Swimming unattended presents a huge hazard to young people who do not know how to swim.  I think the City of Galesburg needs to find other ways of saving money than removing lifeguards from the lake, which has, in times past, been one form of free summer fun for visitors.  Posting signs to “SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK’ is not adequate to the task for city recreation.
