“Public safety reimagined”, initiated in Ithaca, NY, after a 6-yr study, is implementing big changes, “replacing the city’s police-department with a “Dept. of Community Solutions & Public Safety”, intended to reduce the involvement of armed officers in disputes”. Ithaca will create an armed force, with greater, possibly accredited training, and an unarmed safety unit for other community needs. Working with the police union, officers will reapply, being placed according to their strengths.
Atty Gen, Merrick Garland, announced on April 26, that DOJ will be conducting an investigation into policing in Louisville, KY, working with LMPD, in auditing violations of constitutional-policing, in guiding new policies, grant-making & support, to protect the civil-rights of everyone. This investigation follows months of unrest over the wrongful killing of Breonna Taylor, at the hands of LMPD. The Louisville Mayor, Greg Fischer & Police Chief, Erika Shields, former Atlanta policewoman & noted reformer, held a press conference, responding to Garland’s announcement; they were extremely positive in their responses to the probe into LMPD (Louisville Municipal PD). Mayor Fischer said he viewed this audit as an “extraordinary opportunity and an honor to work with the DOJ team, to uncover problems and provide guidance toward correction, to be one of the flagship departments for change, in promoting public-trust between the community & the department”.
Chief Shields noted that our nation is struggling with policing problems, that police reform is necessary & crucial. She stated that “good officers will welcome necessary reform & transformation, as LMPD is comprised of honorable men & women who want to get it right, to have their community be proud of them, and to trust & believe in them”. Many good, ethical officers want to work within a Constitutional-construct in America, to actually Serve & Protect. Note: Several people were killed by police in the few days following Derek Chauvin’s announced Guilty-verdict.
Backlash: 84 anti-protest, anti-speech bills in 34 red states were initiated to inhibit our 1st Amendment rights of assembly, to redress grievances, and to speech. Florida’s Governor DeSantis, signed a bill into law, restricting protests, even granting civil-immunity to drivers who run-down protestors in roadways. Republicans seek to silence our Voices & our Votes! Arizona’s GOP state legislature subpoenaed another 2020 vote count of 2.1 million ballots, after 3 reviews found no fraud. QAnon-supported “Cyber-Ninjas firm” was hired by Repubs to recount the recount AGAIN! OAN announced that the audit was finding signs of fraud. This only perpetuates the Big Lie, feeding into further violence in our country. We must Rise UP & Stand for Truth! NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE!
