What I’d like to see from the new mayor of “our town” besides seeking out and bringing economic development to the “burg”, is that all of the residents and sections of the city are represented by his influence. What positive use can come from so many empty stores and buildings? Safety for our citizens and “city appeal” or appearance are important also. I’m concerned for the children and their parents who live in the trailer parks surrounding Galesburg, that they be considered and protected by the new projected dog ordinances. I’d like to see a a good leadership role from our new mayor encouraging more participation from city residents, and a limit on the “good ole boy network”. And by the way, who pays for Rush Limbaugh to spew his hatred and bigotry over our radio airwaves? And since I’m out on this limb, I’d like to see marijuana decriminalized. (And since word limit on opinions for Community Roundtable of Register Mail is 150 words, I add here an explanation for last sentence of above statement). It is a huge waste of our resources (time, money, and especially people) to imprison our citizenry over marijuana, which the “Father of our country”, George Washington, grew and used for “medicinal purposes” (could be any number of the following: relief for high anxiety and pain, sleep aid, appetite stimulant, etc). (Washington also brewed his own moonshine). When you look at all the negative side effects from all the prescribed man-made medicines like Prozac or Zanax-type drugs, it seems to make more sense to legalize marijuana use (and the govern-ment could gain big monetary resource by taxing it). We should exclude marijuana from our “war on drugs”, and stop ruining people’s lives over use of a plant, whose beneficial uses probably far outweighs the usage of any other plant. From the hemp plant can be extracted: medicines, oil, paper, rope, and more things than I can think of; don’t take my word for it –Google: uses for hemp. It’s just time to stop the madness!
